Killingworth

John R. Speicher passed away peacefully at home with the love of his life, Barbara, by his side on Jan. 16. John grew up in Morris Cove with his parents, Louis Raymond and Esther Speicher, and sister Diane (Brasky). After graduating from Wilbur Cross High School in 1956, he served four years in the Navy as a radioman. Later he moved to Killingworth where he raised his family and was an active member of the community.

John believed in hard work, integrity, and service. He was a mason and 52 year member of CT Rock Lodge/Hiram, served on Killingworth’s Planning & Zoning Commission, and was a member of the Lions Club. John and Barbara owned and operated Pipeline Petroleum, Killingworth’s original oil company, for many years. Family, friends, and others often looked to John for advice or guidance on business and personal finance, and he delighted in giving it. People often remarked on John’s ability to always look on the bright side.

He and Barbara retired to Sarasota, Florida, in 2005. His commitment to service continued in Sarasota, whether delivering Meals on Wheels or attending veterans’ memorial services with the Venice Tin Can Sailors.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children, Joann Feehan, Rebecca Sidiropoulos, Jennifer Armenia, Tracy Desjardins, and Kevin Wagner; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

John will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to the Sarasota County Salvation Army or charity of your choice.
