Guilford

Elmer Holcomb Russell, 94, son of the late Mary Holcomb Russell and Elmer E. Russell, died Jan. 15, peacefully at his home in Guilford. He was the husband of the late Shirley Doebrick Russell and Viola Dragotto Russell.

Elmer was born in West Haven July 10, 1926, graduated from Guilford High School in 1944, and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He retired from Pratt & Whitney North Haven Plant as a technical supervisor of Machine Tool Services in 1986. He was a member of the Totoket Grange #83 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7666 in Guilford and The American Legion in Guilford.

In his younger years, he was an avid bowler; he loved working in his gardens (growing vegetables and flowers) and loved working in his basement on various woodworking projects.

Elmer is survived by his three children, daughter Sharleene (Joseph) Wisniewski of Aiken, South Carolina, daughter Jacquelynne Clince (George O’Day) of Hamden, and son Kenneth (Felicia) Russell of Guilford. Also surviving are his sister, Betsy Bird of Meriden, and brother, Clarence (Betty) Russell of Hinesberg, Vermont, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Ernest E. Russell.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m.on Saturday, Jan. 23, at the North Guilford Cemetery (Old North Cemetery) across from the North Guilford Congregational Church, 159 Ledge Hill Road, Guilford. Masks and social distancing is required during the services. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to VNA Community Healthcare and Hospice, 753 Boston Post Road, Guilford, CT 06437.
