Sallie June (Goodman) Goldschmidt, 75, died peacefully at home in Guilford Jan. 13, after a long struggle with dementia. She was the beloved wife of Stephen Goldschmidt for 53 years. Sallie was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York on June 4, 1945.

In 1961, her family relocated to Bethel where she met Stephen, a fellow member of the Bethel High School Class of 1963. Sallie earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Western Connecticut State University in 1967, and taught in Troy, New York and at Calvin Leete School in Guilford before taking time off to raise a family. After her two sons were grown, she returned to her beloved work teaching young children at Guilford Center for Children, The Country School in Madison, and Indian Neck and John B. Sliney schools in Branford.

Sallie loved reading, the New York Times crossword puzzle, and trivia contests with her family. Above all, she adored nature, whether in the form of country walks with a friend, collecting seashells and rocks, or feeding the songbirds in her yard. Over the years, she was the doting mom to many cherished dogs and cats. Sallie was happiest when tending to and making beautiful floral arrangements from her rambling English gardens, which she planted and maintained with a keen eye. For many years, she was active alongside Stephen in efforts to restore the endangered eastern bluebird population in Guilford and Madison. A child of the 1950s and 1960s, Sallie grew up around her late father Sol’s record shops in New York and Connecticut and adored the music from those times.

Sallie was preceded by her sister and close friend, Ellyn, in 2006. She is survived by her brother Martin, loving husband Stephen, sons David and Daniel, grandchildren Jeremy and Jenna, and loyal terrier Teddy.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sallie’s memory to VNA Community Healthcare & Hospice (connecticuthomecare.org), whose excellent and compassionate care, including through its affiliates Strong House Adult Day Center and Lifetime Care at Home, enabled Sallie to live at home with dignity for the past several years.

A memorial gathering for family and friends to celebrate Sallie’s life will be held once it is safe to do so. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, Guilford.
