Guilford

Robert Thayer Scranton, 88, lifetime resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully on Sept. 25 at home in the presence of family. Robert was born in Guilford on Sept. 27, 1931, to Leroy and Ruth (Thayer) Scranton. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Carolyn (Floyd) Scranton; daughter Nancy and Philip Meteer of Townsend, Massachusetts; son Robert, Jr., and Sara (Mena) of Killingworth; and son Bruce and Lecia (Rusconi) of Guilford.

He is also survived by grandchildren Ruth, Janelle, Sarah, Erica, Lindsey, Audrey, and Kyle; step-grandchildren Romina and Daniela; six great-grandchildren; brother James of Taylorsville, Utah; and sister Betty Ludington of Guilford. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Leroy, Jr., and sister Florence.

Bob worked as a carpenter and foreman for the George C. Field Company of Madison and Clark Corporation of Essex for most of his career. As a jack-of-all-trades he loved to work with his hands on all projects big and small, from tinkering with cuckoo clocks to building his lifelong Guilford residence and a Vermont cabin. He enjoyed the outdoors in all seasons, boating, blue fishing, skiing, hiking, snowmobiling, and hang gliding. Everything was a result of his hard work but Bob was a kid at heart and loved to entertain the children and help them grow. His boundless energy continued through retirement as he kept busy with daily walks, cutting firewood, pinochle, bird watching, toying with solar energy, and gardening.

Private graveside services will be held in North Guilford Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels, Sachem Hollow, 310 State St., Guilford or VNA Community Hospice, 753 Boston St., Guilford. Arrangements in the care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. To share a memory or leave condolences, visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
