North Branford

Margie L. Hughes, 93, passed away peacefully of natural causes with loving family at her side on Aug. 4 at Evergreen Woods in North Branford. Margie was born to Frieda and Edward Reider in Appleton, Wisconsin, on Oct. 23, 1926.

Upon completion of high school, she entered the Cadet Nursing Program at Mercy Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. While there she met the love of her life, Ray Hughes, who had just returned from duty with the US Navy. They married in Appleton in 1946, and began their love story in Chicago. It would take them back and forth across the country several times in their wonderful 64 years together.

Ray was with Western Electric and was transferred often as he progressed up the corporate ladder. This was only a small hiccup for Margie, who said goodbye to her many friends; packed up six children; and re-established the family in a new community. Margie had the house decorated and functional within a week. She was the consummate mother and homemaker who provided a truly idyllic Leave It to Beaver lifestyle for her growing brood.

After Ray retired, the vibrant couple moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore, building a house on Irish Creek near St. Michaels. The extended family enjoyed many wonderful moments there and at memorable family reunions on the Outer Banks in North Carolina and Isle of Palms in South Carolina. Ray and Margie had an extremely wonderful retirement together before Ray passed in 2010.

Margie then moved to Evergreen Woods to be closer to family. She enjoyed a decade there making friends in independent living before her health failed and she moved to the health center. Margie’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the wonderful staff at Evergreen Woods for providing her with excellent care, especially during the COVID-19 crisis when they were unable to visit.

Margie is survived by her 6 children, Barb (Dan) Smith, Carol (Craig) Kawasaki, Nancy (Warren) Kiernan, Nell (Art) Slusark, Kathy (Jim) McNally, and Mike (Bailey) Hughes; 14 grandchildren, Sabrina and Cassie (Barb), Cristina, Dan, and Keith (Carol), Mike, Jessie, and Meaghan (Nancy), Kate, Jane, and Mike (Nell), Tasha (Kathy), and Ty and Chase (Mike); and 13 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way this month. No one loved babies more than Margie, so we know the new arrivals will put a smile on Margie’s and Ray’s faces up in heaven.

Margie and Ray are now together in eternity, together as they were in life. They were interred together on Aug. 10 at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven. A memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice in Margie’s memory. Charitable acknowledgments can be directed to Barb Smith at 1110 Tenwood Dr., Wilmington, NC 78411. Arrangements in the care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford.
