Robert Peter Marx of Old Saybrook died on July 24 at the age of 83. He was born on Nov. 7, 1936, to Albert Marx and Esther Fahrenkrug Marx in OshKosh, Wisconsin. He attended schools in Saginaw, Michigan and eventually enlisted in the Navy. He served on several submarines including the diesel electric submarine, the USS Sailfish (SS-572). After attending Nuclear Power School, he served on the commissioning crew of the nuclear powered submarine, USS John Adams (SSBN-620).

In 1962, he married d’Auvergne Eunice Fleet in Hartford. Together they raised three children, Diana Lynn Marx (deceased), Barbara Dee Marx Pare, and Robert Peter Marx II. They lived for many years in South Windsor before moving to Old Saybrook in 1997.

Bob worked for IBM and later, The Hartford Insurance Group. In retirement, he enjoyed being with his family and the many travels they took together. He enjoyed golf, cards with friends Tom and Linda, boating, skiing, gardening, the Red Sox, and all things outdoors. He was especially proud of his hole-in-one at Fenwick.

In addition to his eldest daughter, Bob was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather Ed Henrichs, and his brothers Wayne Marx and Bill Henrichs.

He will be missed by his wife Dee; daughter Barbara and her husband Bob; son Robert and his wife Suzanne; grandchildren Emily Dee Eller and her husband Joe Eller, Victoria Grace Martin and her husband Andrew Martin, Vincent Michael Marx Messino, Ryan Patrick Marx, and Erin Diana Marx; great-grandchildren Brayden Roe Eller and Addison Loe Martin; and expected great-grandson Jackson Martin. He also leaves his brother Tom Marx and wife Ginger, sister Marlene and husband Steve Barris, sister Janice Kuebler, sister Dianne and husband Ken Yoesting, and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves longtime friend Charley Bates and sister-in law Grace Fleet Bates. They will miss his sense of humor and his infectious laugh.

Bob’s favorite charity was St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Bob lived a long and happy life. He was a doer of life, an adventurer and explorer. He did life his way. Whatever he did, Bob went all in—he gave it his all. Farewell, Bob Marx.
