Sharon B. Caulfield died on July 18 at the hospice at Middlesex Hospital after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Caulfield, whom she married in 1998, and her brothers Michael Bonner and Charles Bonner. She is survived by her brother Christopher Bonner; children Deborah R. Fowler of Bristol, Rhode Island, Frederick R. Rinehart of Ivoryton, and Stephen G. Rinehart of New York City; step-children Sam Caulfield, David Caulfield, Lucy Guillet-Boyden, Morey Hammond, and Bennett Hammond, Jr.; eleven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Sharon, Connecticut on August 10, 1931, she was named for the town of her birth. She grew up in New York City and Westwood, California, and later attended The Spence School in New York. She married George H.D. Rinehart on June 16, 1950, and returned to Connecticut with her young family a few years later. Except for a number of years in Annapolis, Maryland, she was a Connecticut resident for the remainder of her life, living in Westport, Essex, and Old Saybrook. She was divorced from George Rinehart in 1982, and later married Bennett Hammond, who died in 1990.

Sharon was an active athlete, playing tennis well into her seventies, and participating in water aerobics as recently as early this year. She had many friends in the Old Saybrook area, and was a presence at such musical events as the Essex Winter Series and Metropolitan Opera at The Kate. She was an avid conversationalist, particularly about politics, and was known for her wry wit and often humorous observations on life.
