Ann Taffare Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 22 in her son’s Long Island home in the Hamptons, surrounded by her loving family. Ann was the beloved wife of Eugene Smith, who predeceased her on Dec. 31, 2002. Ann and Gene were married in Syosset, New York, on November 11, 1965. Ann was born on Oct. 17, 1929, in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Giuseppe and Maria (Ruggiero) Taffare and was the youngest daughter of the first generation Taffari’s from Menfi, Sicily.

Ann was one of four children, and she lived at home with her parents and younger brother until marriage. Following her high school graduation, Ann began her bookkeeping career as an apprentice and worked her way up to being a bookkeeper for a shipping company. At the end of her professional career, she was an office manager for a professional engineering firm in Malverne, New York.

After her marriage, she became a stay-at-home mother to her two sons, James and Eugene. The family resided in Syosset and had their vacation home in the Hamptons. As the daughter of a seamstress and a barber, Ann always had a wonderful flair for fashion. She and Eugene also loved to travel and did so around the world.

In 1989 they retired to their home in Chester to be closer to her sister Josephine and Cousin Bart and their families. After losing her husband in 2002, Ann remained in Chester until she moved back to the Hamptons in 2013, so Eugene, his wife, and her grandchildren could care for her in her remaining years.

Ann is survived by James, his wife Robyn, and his son Henry, and Eugene and his wife Shannon and their children Bryanna, Melissa, Jeremy, Ethan, and Jocelyn. She also leaves her sisters Florence Barbasso and Josephine Marshall, who lovingly called her “Baby,” and her goddaughter Susan Marshall-Jones. Besides her husband Eugene and her parents, Ann was predeceased by her brother Stephen.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Saint Joseph’s Church, 48 Middlesex Ave. in Chester on July 29. Interment followed in the Fountain Hill Cemetery, High Street, in Deep River.
