Guilford

Klaus J. Breitbarth of Guilford died peacefully on June 21, Father’s Day, at the Apple Rehab Center in Guilford. He was 93.

Born in 1926 to Frederick and Emmi Breitbarth in what was then Breslau, Germany, he and his family fled the Nazi regime, emigrating from Ratibor in 1938 and settling at the Manumit School in Pawling, New York. Thanks to the school’s Committee for Refugee Children and its contact with the European underground resistance, Klaus and his sister Beate were among the 23 fortunate Jewish children who attended and lived at the school. During his time at Manumit, Klaus learned how to raise chickens, drive a tractor, and speak English. He served in the US Army during World War II and, while stationed in Japan, discovered sushi and table tennis, both of which he would enjoy for the rest of his life.

Klaus then attended Goddard College in Vermont on the GI bill, where he met his wife of 63 years, Patricia Millian (deceased 2013). There he honed his photography skills and, just out of college, secured a job as one of the first print photographers for the Catskill Mountain News.

He raised his family in Queens, New York and Matawan, New Jersey while working for companies in Manhattan and north Jersey as a salesman of high-end office equipment. He later became a corporate placement consultant.

He was predeceased by his wife Patricia; his sister, the artist Beate Wheeler Holst; and his cousin Michael Schweiger. He is survived by his children Karen Rosenthal (David) of Guilford; David Breitbarth (Kate Hampton) of Sarasota, Florida; his nephew Sebastian Holst of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and his two grandchildren, Samuel and Lucy Rosenthal, also of Guilford.

His family would like to express deep gratitude to the EMTs and paramedics of the Guilford Fire Department who provided expert and compassionate care to Klaus, as well as his late wife, at their Guilford home on numerous occasions.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department, 390 Church St., Guilford, CT 06437. Arrangements in the care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. To share a memory or leave condolences, visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
