Essex, Old Saybrook

Betty L. Hoar, 86, of Old Saybrook and previously Essex, passed away May 30 at Apple Health & Rehabilitation from complications of Covid-19. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 29, 1933.

She was predeceased by her parents Walter E. Pollard and Helen Dunlap Pollard, her sister Nancy J. Kerr-Smith, her husband Truman E. Hoar, and her son John F. Hoar. She is survived by a daughter, Judith Hoar of Old Saybrook.

Betty received a bachelor’s degree from Boston University. She enjoyed a varied career in retail working for Perry Scott’s Ship Chandlery, The Linen Shop, and the Silkworm in Essex center. She worked for many years at Alicia B, a Centerbrook fashion boutique. Her final job prior to retirement was the receptionist at Burton’s Hair Fashions in Old Saybrook. Betty and her husband loved dancing and following local bands. They continued to dance and enjoy live entertainment well into their sixties.
