Old Saybrook

Ann M. Cooke, 79, died April 6. A resident of Old Saybrook, she was an educator at the Deep River Elementary School. She was born in Brockton, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1940, the daughter of Roland Howard Marden and Shirley Dow Marden.

Ann lived in Randolph, Massachusetts until her marriage in 1968 to her husband Durgin W. Cooke, who died in 1994. She leaves Richard D. Marden, her brother, of Randolph, Massachusetts.

She received a bachelor’s degree from Bridgewater State College and a master’s degree from Central Connecticut College. For 34 years, Ann enjoyed teaching children in their early years. Upon retirement she continued to mentor students in the Deep River School for ten more years.

Ann is further survived by her cousins Sandra J. Linehan, of South Easton, Massachusetts, Judith A. Marden, of Greene, Maine, Dana F. Shave, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Robert K. Blanchard, of Rye, New Hampshire, Diane M. Cahill, of San Mateo, California, Donna J. Walsh, of Sun City, Florida, and Christopher J. Blanchard, of Kennebunk, Maine. Ann is also survived by her dear friends Wendy Beni and Peg Lieberman, both of Chester.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ann’s name may be made to either First Congregational Church of Randolph, Massachusetts Scholarship Fund, 1 S. Main St., Randolph, MA 02368, Friends of the Turner Free Library, Crawford Square, Randolph MA 02368, or the Smilow Cancer Center, c/o Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, 365 Montauk Ave., New London, CT 06320.

A private graveside service will be held at the Melrose Cemetery in Brockton, Massachusetts, while a memorial gathering is planned for a time after the viral pandemic abates.
