George Durney of Guilford, formerly of Greenwich, husband of Jean Weissberg, died peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 28 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons Patrick and his wife Lauren, and George Jr. and his wife Anne; and five grandchildren, Ryan, Kendall, Bryce, Matt, and Marc. Funeral Services were held at the Guilford Funeral Home on Jan. 4. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Orchard House in Branford and the Alzheimer’s Assocation in Southington.

The world lost a good man this weekend. George Durney passed away peacefully on Dec. 28 with family by his side. He will be remembered as an easygoing, friendly, generous man. George had two passions in life—golf and dining out, and he did both as frequently as possible.

George enjoyed the game of golf his entire adult life. His 30-year career at IBM as a systems analyst provided plenty of time to play in the IBM golf league and town tournaments. He even won the Greenwich Town Tournament (senior division) in the late 90s! He not only loved to play the game, but also watch the golf channel, which afforded him frequent opportunities to “rest his eyes” in his favorite recliner. When not golfing or napping, George engaged in his other passion—dining out. Whether it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner he was always ready to go. His favorite food was anything with blueberries and if blueberry pancakes were on the menu there was no need to read further.

A little-known fact about George—as a young boy, he was a very good roller skater. In his 50’s he decided to revisit his hobby and picked up roller blading as a form of exercise. He could frequently be found roller blading at his favorite beach until a roller-blading accident resulted in a fractured hip—so much for exercise. At that point he decided, golf was safer and got his exercise by roaming the course. George will be remembered as a kind and generous man. He gave to charities, his church and enjoyed slipping his grandkids some pocket money when he would see them. Dementia robbed George of his memory in his twilight, but he remained a kind and gentle man who was loved by all who knew him. George leaves behind a loving family and friends who will miss him greatly.
