James Denver Corvello passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on Nov. 11, with his wife Barbara, daughter Karen, and brother Bill and his family by his side.

Jim, born Nov. 28, 1938, grew up in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Trained as a welder, at the age of 28 he started his first business and was self-employed for the rest of his life. He owned two welding schools, a bar and restaurant, and a handyman service. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do with his hands, including oil paintings of land and seascapes as a young man, a beautiful sculpture welded for his home, and home projects including decks and a garage.

He loved the air and sea, earning his pilot’s license in his forties. He, Barb, and his family spent lots of wonderful times together in Hawaii and on the Outer Banks. He was also a great lover of animals and could generally be found with one of his dogs on his lap or his shoulders. He is predeceased by Flaps and survived by Sparky.

A quiet man, he was known for his dry sense of humor. From his hospice bed overlooking the Long Island Sound, he declared himself ready to try water skiing. He was a loyal friend who never ever gave up on people, and was generous in sharing his handyman skills.

He was especially proud of his family’s military service. Jim and his three brothers all served in the Marines, Jim for six years in the Reserves.

Jim is survived by his wife of 28 years, Barbara Tyrrell Corvello; daughter Karen; brother Bill and family; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his mother-in-law Carol Tyrrell. He is predeceased by his parents Roderick and Mary Corvello, sister Louise, and brothers Buster and Richard.

Friends were invited to visitation and memorial services at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford, on Nov. 14.
