Chester

Jarvis Elmer Smith, Jr., (“Smitty”), 81, of Chester died on Oct. 12.

As described in Smitty’s yearbook, “Mischievous there art a foot” was spot on as he left behind a trail of mischievousness! Mischievousness combined with a great sense of humor and love of telling jokes.

A strong soul has departed us last week, but he was a fighter and fought with all his might until his illness became too mighty to defeat. His presence will be tremendously missed. Our memories are filled with special times, laughter, and great story telling.

Smitty was an Army veteran and master mechanic; he loved to build things, fix things, and restore old cars. He also loved to travel and meet people. He lived in Puerto Rico for three years and owned a special home in Belize. He and Kim enjoyed a very memorable trip to Switzerland.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother, and sister. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 29 years, Kim, his sons Gerald, Derrick, and Pete, and several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

We’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to all visitors—you lifted his spirits and shared special memories. A big thanks to the hospice team, especially Dr. Buckley, nurses Courtney and Jen, who surely never met anyone like Smitty! Thanks also to Zenardo Oil Company and Ron.

A service will be held at the Congregational Church in Deep River on Sat., Oct. 26 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to an animal charity in memory of their beloved dog Zelda.
