Mary Jeanne Walsh, 75, of Clinton, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Oct. 2.

Mary was born in Bridgeport to John and Fay McMahon on April 29, 1944. She went to high school at Notre Dame and graduated in 1962. She earned her teaching degree at Southern Connecticut State University with a major in English in 1966. She met her husband Richard (Dick) Walsh, at Southern Connecticut State University, where they dated for 3 years and were happily married for 53 years.

Mary started her career at Fort Meade Elementary School in Maryland teaching 6th grade. She continued teaching 4th through 6th grade for 38 years at Deep River Elementary School in Connecticut, where she was innovative, creative, and passed on her love for literature. She positively impacted many lives through her work as a teacher and friend.

Mary was a dedicated wife and mother. She and Richard enjoyed spending time together at their favorite restaurants where they made many friends, attending sporting events and being with their family. She could not have been more proud of her children and their spouses. She loved her grandchildren immensely and treasured her family vacations with them.

Mary was an avid sports fan and had a passion for women’s basketball and had season tickets for the Connecticut Sun and UConn women’s basketball games, where she enjoyed watching with her husband. She was an excellent fantasy gamer and played D&D with her friends at her house twice a month for the last 40 years.

Mary was a dedicated parishioner at St. Mary’s Church of the Visitation in Clinton for more than 40 years. She was an excellent lecturer and part of the Small Christian Community. She appreciated the many friends she made at the church.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents John and Fay McMahon; her sister Eileen McMahon; and her granddaughter Adelle Greeley. Mary is survived by her devoted husband Richard Walsh of Clinton; son John (Jane) Allard-Walsh; daughters Eileen (Brendan) Maguire and Kathleen (Eric Greeley); her treasured grandchildren Nora and Lennon Maguire, Isla and Archer Greeley, and Alora and Freya Allard-Walsh; goddaughter Megon (Ryan) Dudley; and dear friend Joanne Bennett.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Middlesex Health Hospice Services and Palliative Care for their compassion and care for Mary.

Visitation was held at Swan Funeral Home in Clinton on Oct. 8. Her Funeral Service was held at Saint Mary’s Church of the Visitation in Clinton on October 9. A reception was held following the service.

Mary requested that the last line of her obituary read as follows: “Please send all of your prayers to my beloved son-in-law, Brendan Maguire, as he fights cancer and I help him from Heaven.”
