Lewis Willard Scranton passed away on Aug. 1 at his home in Killingworth at the age of 83. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Janet Hetzel Scranton, and is survived by his daughter Abigail S. Patrizio and her husband Carmine N.A. Patrizio of Clinton; and his daughter Rebecca W.S. Durbin and her husband Philip B. Durbin, granddaughter Katharine W. Durbin, and grandson Jackson W. Durbin, all of North Laurel, Maryland.

Lew was born in New Haven, grew up in Guilford, and lived happily for the past 54 years in Killingworth. He graduated from Guilford High School in 1954 and received his associate degree from UConn Agricultural School. His love of local history was evident in the homes where he resided as well as his involvement with local organizations dedicated to the preservation of Killingworth and Guilford and their pasts.

After early careers as a florist and real estate agent, a love for antiques that began as a teenager grew to become a full-time passion as well as career, and lasted until his death. Lew was a renowned Early American antiques dealer known for his various collections and eye for a rare piece. His knowledge was shared throughout the Northeast at shows and in shops and homes of other dealers and collectors. This love brought him great happiness. He also thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends and family over a drink and a plate of cheese and crackers.

A graveside service was held on Aug. 5 at Evergreen Cemetery, 236 Green Hill Rd., Killingworth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Killingworth Historical Society, PO Box 707, Killingworth, CT 06419.
