George Hance passed away peacefully at home on May 22 after a short but epic fight against cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in 1949 in Mamaroneck, New York, to George and Frances Hance (nee Pirrung). He was the third of five children, and had many colorful stories from a quintessential 1950’s childhood. Some of his happiest memories were of summers on the beach in Long Island with his parents, siblings, grandparents, and cousins.

He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1973 with a degree in biology and physics, and later earned an MBA from the University of Hartford. He went on to spend 40 years in manufacturing, eventually running several companies specializing in printed circuit boards and electronics.

He met Lorraine, the love of his life, in 1973. They were married in 1976, and built a happy, wonderful life together for 46 years. An adventurer at heart, he and Lorraine soon welcomed three crew members. George was happiest when he was planning the next family adventure or home improvement project. He made sure that his children had plenty of character-building experiences, and he was very proud of all of them.

He is survived by his very patient and loving wife, Lorraine; his three smart-a** children, Mike Hance (Santa Cruz, California), Katie Stella (Washington, D.C.), and Kristen Gouin (Boston, Massachusetts), and their very patient spouses Sarah, Adam, and Brian; his grandchildren Eve and Lila Hance, Dominic and Annie Stella, and baby Gouin expected soon; his siblings Susan McGeady (Cherry Hill, New Jersey), Gary Hance (Avon), Neil Hance (St. Petersburg, Florida), Chris Hance (Tampa, Florida), and their families; and his vocal, four-legged companion, Simon.

A celebration of his life is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that donations can be made in his name to Friends of Hammonasset or The Humane Society.
