Guilford

Alfred E. Toolan, age 90, of Guilford, died peacefully on May 24. He was the loving husband of 47 years to the late Joan C. (McGuinness) Toolan. Al was born on Oct. 17, 1928, in New York City, the sixth of eight children of Michael J. and Anne Toolan. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany post WWII. Before his retirement, he was an executive of a major supermarket food chain.

Al was the proud father of Diana B Toolan of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, Catherine Toolan of Marina del Rey, California, Tracey McGinley (husband Dennis) of Guilford, and John A. Toolan (wife Kerry) of San Pedro, California. He is survived by his brother Francis Toolan; as well as six grandchildren, CailĂ­n Meara (husband Andrew Winkle), Arielle M. Toolan-Rogers, Eamon A. Toolan, Lauren Gullette (husband Curtis), Dennis McGinley, and Conor McGinley. In addition to his wife, Al was predeceased by his son Alfred E. Toolan, Jr.

Al was a longtime resident of Guilford. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and UConn basketball, and an avid watcher of golf. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family more than anything. His kindness, generosity, and warmth will be missed by many.

Calling hours were held on May 28 at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St., Guilford, on May 29. Burial with Military Honors followed in St. George Cemetery, Hubbard Road, Guilford.
