Groton, formerly Old Saybrook

Roland Walter Laine, 68, formerly of Old Saybrook for 60 years, now residing in Groton, died peacefully in his sleep on May 5.

Roland was born in Miami, Florida on Jan. 12, 1951, son of Florence vanDoorn and Arthur Laine.

He leaves a sister Bunnie Louise Lubs and her husband, Jim, of Old Saybrook, two nieces, two nephews, and two great-nephews.

Roland graduated from Old Saybrook High School, Class of 1969. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology and apprenticed under photographer Jim Boothman and eventually purchased his Saybrook Studio Photography business in 1972 until 2002. From 1998 to 2012, Roland was the executive assistant to the Old Saybrook First Selectman where he was the town’s representative to the Estuary Transit District for many years. He was an initial member of the Building and Restoration Committee for The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and served as its chairman from 2008 to 2010. Roland was a charter member of the Connecticut Professional Photographers Association from 1972 to 2019 and served as a board member and secretary and was the executive manager for 14 years. He was a very talented photographer and enjoyed cooking and baking and music. He also served on the Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church.

A graveside burial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in the Memorial Garden, 336 Main Street, Old Saybrook, on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. with Father Charlie Hamill officiating.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or Old Saybrook Youth & Family Services. Swan Funeral Home, Old Saybrook, is in charge of arrangements.
