Madison

Ann M. (O’Brien) Gilligan, age 72, died on April 2 at Yale-New Haven Hospital after a brief illness. She was a resident of Madison.

She is survived by her daughter Lauren (Ian) Stanton; her grandchildren Parker and Margaux; and sisters Pat (Rich) Palfy and Maureen (Roy Creekmore) O’Brien. She was preceded in death by her husband Michael J. Gilligan (2009); and stepmother Marge O’Brien.

Ann was born on Dec. 21, 1946, in Bronx, New York, to William and Mary (McNamara) O’Brien. She graduated from St. Barnabas High School in Bronx, New York, and received degrees from Mount St. Vincent College and Hunter College. She taught high school English at DeWitt Clinton in Bronx, New York; George Washington in Washington Heights, New York, New York; and Leadership and Public Service High School in New York, New York. She also served as intern coordinator at Leadership and Public Service.

Ann was a 40-year resident of Harriman, New York. After Michael’s death, she moved to Madison in 2010. Ann was involved in the Madison Winter Club, serving on the special events and marketing committees. She made many friends while in Madison and she will be missed by all who knew her.

Donations can be made in her memory to the Metropolitan Opera. However, her memory will be kept alive by her family and friends whenever they enjoy the arts; have a great meal; sip on a cosmo or glass of wine; stay up too late reading a great book; travel; do the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink; make lists; appreciate a good thunderstorm; visit the beach; and take quiet pleasure in watching the snowdrops, tulips, and lilies bloom.

In lieu of traditional funeral services and per Ann’s wishes, the family will host a celebration of life later this spring.
