Old Lyme

Irving Charles LaMay of Old Lyme passed away on April 5.

He was born on March 18, 1932, in Old Saybrook, the son of Irving J. LaMay and Eunice Warner LaMay. He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Barbara Beakey LaMay.

Irv was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving during the Korean War. He attended the University of Colorado in Denver and, on returning to Old Saybrook, he went to work for his father at LaMay Construction Company, which he and his brother Dick continued to run until his retirement. Irv was a member of the Connecticut Road Builders Association, and a member and past president of the Old Saybrook Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and Old Saybrook Exchange Club. He coached Little League Baseball and served as president of Old Saybrook Youth Football. He was a veteran member of the Old Saybrook Fire Department and a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.

He is survived by his partner of 19 years, Carmella Van Benthuysen of Syracuse, New York; children Lois Haag and her husband George of East Haddam, David LaMay and his wife Linda of Old Saybrook, and Paul LaMay and his wife Jane of Chalfont, Pennsylvania; grandchildren Lyndsey, Sam, Danielle, Emily, and Ben; and great-grandchildren Ella, Logan, and Olivia. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his siblings Lois, Robert, and Richard.

Calling hours will be held on April 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on April 13 at 10 a.m. at St. John Church, 161 Main St., Old Saybook. Burial with military honors will follow at Cypress Cemetery, Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Old Saybrook Fire Department, the Connecticut Special Olympics, or simply invite a friend out to lunch and keep your loved ones close.
