Madison, North Branford

Mary Spears Canfield of North Branford, formerly of Madison, passed from natural causes at Evergreen Woods Health Center on Feb. 1. She was the beloved mother of two devoted daughters, Nancy Smith Shook and Margaret MacKay Smith. She was predeceased by her loving son Robert Lee Smith and her husbands Robert Lee Smith and George K. Canfield. She is survived by her daughters; son-in-law Gregory Shook; grandchildren Rachel Lee Shook, Ryan William Shook (Chris Petersen), Julia Shook Munoz (Eric), and Kyle Wayland Shook; her brother US Ret. Col. Joseph MacKay Spears, Jr.; eleven nieces and nephews; and her great-grandson Cyrus Dana Antle.

Born June 10, 1926, in Winnetka, Illinois, she was the daughter of Joseph MacKay Spears and Ruth Van Deursen Spears. She graduated from Duke University and worked for what later became the CIA as a secretary. Upon her marriage to Robert Lee Smith, they were stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, and had subsequent assignments for the US Army within the states. After Bob’s death, she married George Canfield, former First Selectman of Bridgewater, and moved to Madison. She was affectionately known as Mitzi. An excellent Army wife, an accomplished pianist, and a great bridge player, she resides in our hearts now and forever.

The family would like to thank the staff at Evergreen Woods Health Center for the loving way in which she was cared for while in residence.

Services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 E. Main St., Branford, CT 06405. To sign the online guestbook, please visit hawleylincolnmemorial.com.
