Old Saybrook, Essex

Douglas Ryan of Old Saybrook and Essex quietly passed away at Apple Rehab in Old Saybrook on Jan. 11. He was born in 1924.

He was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, and after his service he worked for Cramer Controls in Centerbrook for many years. He then worked independently, building a forge and creating fine wrought iron lighting fixtures. A lifelong member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Essex, he crafted the cross in the memorial garden and designed and made the mold for casting the celtic cross above the church office.

He was predeceased by his wife Deborah and is survived by his daughters Tracy of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Derry of Cape Coral, Florida, and their families. A sister, Sue Robertson, lives in Kempton, Pennsylvania, and his brother Richard recently passed away.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Church, corner of Main and Cross Streets in Essex, on Saturday, May 18 at 10:30 a.m. Contributions in Doug’s name may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Essex.
