Nancy Simonds, 75, of Ivoryton, beloved daughter of Lt. Col. Ernest L. Wood, passed away Dec. 27. As a young woman, Nancy earned two Sustained Superior Performance Awards working for the Executive Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Pentagon and trained in the White House and Capitol Hill.

She spent the most recent years of her life tirelessly serving the Middlesex County community through a number of charitable works including: member of the Essex Library Association Book Club, International Rotarian and program chair, emissary for Mount Saint John’s Boys School in Deep River, and emissary for The Crosby Educational Fund for Haiti. She spent more than half her life performing volunteer services for area hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, homeless veterans, and three years for the National Theater of the Deaf. She enjoyed reading, writing (including two published anthologies), cooking, and aerobics.

She is survived by her son Robert W. Willgoos and wife Bonnie of Coventry, Rhode Island; three grandchildren, Alex, Tyler, and Megan; cousin Barbara Schroeder; and many close friends.

A short public service will be held at Robinson, Wright and Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. in Centerbrook on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Make A Wish Foundation of Connecticut, 126 Monroe Tpke., Trumbull, CT 06611.
