Austin Louis Joyner, age 80, husband of Marika Bollen Joyner, passed away after a long illness on Dec. 5 with his family by his side. Al was born on Nov. 14, 1938, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the late Austin and Leila Carré Joyner. He attended Steven’s Tech in Hoboken, New Jersey, and spent the last 45 years residing in Madison.

Al was a helicopter pilot in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam during the beginning of the conflict in 1963. After 9 years in the Marine Corps, he honorably discharged and became a pilot for Pan-Am World Airways. After Pan-Am went out of business, he went back to school and became a financial advisor until his retirement.

Al had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed oil painting and monthly meetings with his book club, where he was an avid reader of historical and non-fiction books. Al was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his wife Marika, Al is survived by a son, Paul Nicolas Joyner; a daughter, Claire Joyner Christina; granddaughters Tatum Marie Christina and Piper Ellen Christina; a sister, Leila Joyner-Smith of Washington, D.C.; a niece, Holly Lynde of Atlanta, Georgia; and several cousins.
