Niantic, New York City, Deep River

Troy A. Hoelzen passed on Dec. 1 at age 54.

A photographer, he used his camera to share his vision of the world as it was and as it could be. He loved to walk, camera in hand, capturing with an artist soul the streets, town, and cities he lived in. No detail escaped him, or was too small to capture his imagination.

With a background in graphic design and professional stints at the New York Times and Hartford Courant, he documented the mundane and elevated it so it could be seen and perhaps even understood. He used photography to voice his social commentaries, to reveal social inequities, as well as to honor and celebrate life, nature, and his country.

He spent many years in New York City, before coming back to Connecticut, the state he grew up in and loved. Settling in Deep River, he quickly grew fond of the town, its people, and long New England history. He is survived by his wife Natasha Andjelic, his sister Tracy Hoelzen, and nephew Scott. He was loved and is deeply missed.
