Mary Agnes Weinberger, 92, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Nov. 17 surrounded by family and friends at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. She and her late husband William R. (Bill) Weinberger were 45-year residents of Madison.

Mary was born at home in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, to the late Charles and Anna Coll. She graduated from Trenton State College and began her career as a teacher in Phillipsburg. She met her husband Bill, a student across the river at Lafayette College, on a blind date. They enjoyed more than 58 years of marriage living (she would say sweltering) briefly in Florence, Alabama, then moving to Queens and Oyster Bay, New York, Towson, Maryland, and finally Madison.

Mary was devoted to raising her three children and was an active volunteer in their schools. When the children had grown, Mary answered an ad on a whim, which launched a 24-year second career as secretary of the Madison Beach and Recreation Department, where she wielded considerable authority dispensing passes to the Madison town beaches. Town residents still recall the memorable sightseeing trips she led to places like New York and Boston, as well as the many classes she organized. In 1996, Mary was awarded the Rotary Club of Madison’s Service Award for service above self. Even the few in town who didn’t know Mary personally have no doubt seen her tooling around town in her bright red Honda Civic.

Mary is survived by her son Bob (Cindy) Weinberger of Sudbury, Massachusetts, her son Jim (Debbie) Weinberger of White Hall, Maryland, and her daughter Sharon (Scott) Dredger of Cranbury, New Jersey. They will forever remember the sacrifice their Mom made to make their Dad safe and comfortable at home in the final years of his life.

Mary also leaves behind her loving sister Janet Shepherd of New Providence, New Jersey. Their long phone calls were always a highlight of Mary’s week. As anyone who met Mary quickly learned, the love of her life was her six grandchildren, Bill, Mike, Remy, Dane, Dani, and Kelly, and her two great-grandchildren, Zaida and Hana. It was impossible to have a conversation with her without being brought up to date with every detail of their lives. Mary enjoyed painting, participating in the Madison Tuesday Art Group for many years. She was a member of both the Madison and Clinton Art Societies. She and her husband Bill spent several enjoyable decades collecting antique Sandwich glass. Mary was a longtime parishioner at St. Margaret Church in Madison where she also volunteered.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 10 a.m., in St. Margaret Church, Academy Street, Madison. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name can be made to the “Floor 7 South Comfort Care Unit” at Middlesex Hospital (middlesexhospital.org/donate-now).
