Elliot J. Wilcox, longtime resident of Guilford and more recently of Evergreen Woods, North Branford, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Oct. 11, surrounded in love by his family. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy N. Wilcox; four children, Mark Wilcox and his wife Susan of Cohasset, Massachusetts, Martha Wilcox Grigsby of Madison, Peter Wilcox and his wife Laurie of Cheshire, and Peggy Wilcox Russell of Guilford; eight grandchildren; his sister, Charlotte Weiler of Broomfield, Colorado; a niece; two nephews and their families; and a multitude of friends.

Elliot was born in Stratford and graduated from Stratford High School, Class of 1947. He graduated from UConn Class of 1955, with a B.S. in electrical engineering.

Elliot enlisted in the Navy and proudly served his country for four years aboard the destroyer, the USS Newman K. Perry.

Upon retirement from Southern New England Telephone, Co., after more than 30 years employment, he opened the Bayberry Creek Boat Shop on Chaffinch Island Road in Guilford, where he handcrafted wooden boats.

Elliot’s love of boating is evidenced throughout his life. He was a founding member and commodore of the Guilford Yacht Club; an instructor and commander with the New Haven Sail and Power Squadron; and served as board member and president of Schooner, Inc.

Elliot was a master mason for 58 years at St. Alban’s Lodge #38 during which he held many distinguished positions, most recently as chaplain to the worshipful master. His involvement with the Masons was one of his greatest joys and commitments.

A member of Christ Episcopal Church since moving to Guilford in 1954, Elliot filled many leadership roles and was assisting with services until very recently.

Many local organizations benefited from Elliot’s service, including Guilford Interfaith Housing, the Planning & Zoning Commission, Indian Cove Association, and several Evergreen Woods resident committees, to name a few.

He pursued his love of genealogy as an active member of the Genealogical Society and several historical societies and libraries.

Elliot loved to sail, was an avid reader and a gifted gardener, and enjoyed a sport in every season, particularly UConn Women’s basketball.

He was most passionate about his family. Elliot and Nancy married on Jan. 4, 1958 and settled in Guilford where they raised their four children, moving to Evergreen Woods in 2005. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the Evergreen Woods staff and residents for their love and care of Elliot and Nancy.
