Guilford

Robert Edmond White, MD, a 42 year resident of Guilford, passed away at home on Oct. 9, from malignant melanoma. He was surrounded by Kathleen, his devoted wife of 49 years, and his sons and their families: Andrew and Claire White with grandchildren Matthew, Henry, and Emmy, and David White and Crystal Gaudio with grandchildren Helen and Frederick.

Rob was born on Nov. 21, 1942 to Edmond and Mary (Pawlyk) White in Jersey City, New Jersey. He graduated from Hancock New York High School, St. Bonaventure University, and the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. Following training in internal medicine and gastroenterology, he practiced expertly and compassionately for 32 years, first in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and then in New Haven. He was a clinical assistant professor at the Yale School of Medicine and attending physician at Yale New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of St. Raphael. He taught numerous medical trainees, once sited as “the best teacher this year.” He had many devoted patients. He was highly respected by his colleagues for medical excellence and was appreciated by nursing staff for his extraordinary kindness. He also provided medical care and training at various global health sites including the Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Arizona, Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in desChapelles, Haiti, Machame Hospital in Tanzania, and ASRI Clinic in Sukadana, Indonesia.

During his 11-year retirement from medicine, Dr. White continued his life of service as an active member of the Guilford Rotary, embracing the Rotary Memorial Education Fund. He loved music, and sang with several local chorales, most proudly with the New Haven Chorale, where he served on the Board of Directors. He became fluent in Italian, was a founding cyclist of the Dunk Rock Roadies, an avid boater, an inquisitive reader and conversationalist, and a generous, kind, and gentle friend.

He is also survived by his brother, Tom White of New Port Richey, Florida, and Tom’s daughters, Pam, Laura and Terri, and several cousins as well as in-laws Jackie and Jerry, Tom and Sandy, and Hank and Peggy and nine nieces and nephews.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at Thomas More Chapel at Yale University, 268 Park Street, New Haven on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, Rob had requested that contributions be sent to the Robert E. White, MD Memorial Fund at St. Martin de Porres Academy, 208 Columbus Avenue, New Haven, CT 06519.
