Freehold, New Jersey, formerly of Guilford

Evelyn Poulos Anastasiou, wife of the late Lazarus J. Anastasiou, died Oct. 10 in Freehold, New Jersey. She was the mother of Dr. Theodore J. Anastasiou (Amanda Anastasiou) of Holmdel, New Jersey, and Gregory G. Anastasiou (Melissa Anastasiou) of East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, and grandmother of Clayton, Calista, Alexa, Skyla, and Alivia. She was the sister of Mary Marinos of Richmond, Virginia, and Helen Magos of Jacksonville, Florida, sister-in-law of Ann Setnes of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and godmother of Paul Vartelas of Shelton, John Morris of Madison, and Chris Bacalis of Florida. She is also survived by four nephews, Paul Silvernail, Michael Marinos, Theodore Marinos, and Anthony Magos, and a niece, Lori Mullens.

Mrs. Anastasiou graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in English. Early on, she was a teacher in Hartford, then a guidance counselor in Madison. She then focused on raising a family once her sons were born, but kept involved in education by tutoring many local students. She enjoyed an active social life with friends and neighbors. She recently moved from Guilford to New Jersey to be closer to her children and grandchildren, who brought her so much joy.

Friends may call Friday, Oct. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church, 480 Race Brook Road, Orange. Burial is in Alder Brook Cemetery, Guilford.
