Guilford

Stanley (Stan) Schindler, long-time resident of Guilford, passed away peacefully Aug. 31 at the age of 86. He was the beloved husband of the late Roslyn Schindler.

Stan will be lovingly remembered by his life partner of two decades, Guilford resident Nancy Peterson; as well as by his identical twin brother Robert (Ruth) of Port St. Lucie, Florida; and his daughters Elizabeth Johnson (Alan) and Catherine, both of Los Angeles. He was also devoted to Nancy’s children Rick, Andrew (Jurate), and Karen (Hank Safferstein), and a doting grandfather to their children Sophie and Eva Peterson and Sam, Jack, and Kira Safferstein. He also leaves behind his cherished huskie-retriever mix, Annie.

Stan was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, received his bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and then began a career in reference book publishing. He worked in New York City until relocating his young family to Guilford, first to work at Dushkin Publishing at the Guilford docks, and later founding Sachem Publishing Group.

He loved boating, fishing, and living at the Shoreline. Before the days of Google, Stan was a human search engine, well-versed in science, history, and the art of the written word. He took great pleasure in reading the New York Times and enjoyed a clever turn of phrase. He was kind and attentive, humble to his core, yet with a touch of elegance. His humor, gentleness, and grace will be terribly missed.
