Middletown, Rhode Island

Phyllis Rosamond (Maxwell) Bai of Middletown, Rhode Island, formerly of Old Saybrook, passed away on Sept. 6 after a short illness at age 95.

Phyllis was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, on Oct. 11, 1922, to the late Robert and Teresa (McKeon) Maxwell, the youngest of their six children. She is predeceased by her husband John Andrew Bai and her siblings Robert, Henry, Edward, Harriet Norton, and Anita Kiely, as well as her youngest son Jeffrey.

Upon graduation in 1940 from North Quincy High School, she started working for the New England Telephone Company in Boston, Massachusetts. After marrying, she and her husband John settled in Hamden, where they raised their five children.

She is survived by Janice (Nicholas) of Waterford; John of Cable, Wisconsin; Karen (John) of Newport, Rhode Island; and David of Monterey County, California. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Phyllis retired after 33 years of service from the Southern New England Telephone Co. in New Haven. In her spare time Phyllis loved gardening (for several years she was a member of the American Garden Club), sewing, knitting, baking, and was an avid reader. A very positive person, she loved nothing more than cooking and baking for her children and grandchildren.

A private burial will be held in Hamden. Arrangements are in the care of Beecher & Bennett Funeral Home, www.beecherandbennett.com.
