Westbrook

With heavy hearts we must share the news that on Aug. 5 we lost a piece of ourselves. Our beloved Daniel “Danny” Joseph Bowes, Sr., passed away surrounded by his family in our home in Westbrook.

Danny was born in 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, to Joseph and Mary Mazza Bowes, then moved to the Bronx, which created a lifelong Yankees fan. In the early 40’s the family moved to Groton. In 1956 he graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School, attended Mitchell College, and served in the Marine Corps Reserves. In 1955 Dan met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Flora Orkney. In 1960 they were married at Sacred Heart Church in Groton.

He started working at Donnelly’s in Old Saybrook and was well respected by his co-workers; he retired in 1997.

He was part of the original team that helped to form St. Mary Church at the top of Fort Hill in Groton. The church held a special place in his heart. He lived in Westbrook for 43 years, where he was a member of St. Mark’s Church, and the Elks Club. He was blessed to be surrounded by neighbors that were more like family.

Danny is survived by his loving wife Flora; children Dan Jr., Missy, and Marianne (Poppy); his granddaughter Abigail Placencia; two great-grandsons, Joseph and Noah; sister Rosemary Bombard (Bill); and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister MaryAnn Biekert. Danny Bowes will always be a son, brother, husband, and father, but also a friend to so many. He will be deeply missed. Everybody that met Danny Bowes loved Danny Bowes.

A Memorial Mass was held on Aug. 10 at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 222 McVeagh Rd., Westbrook. There were no visiting hours. Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be directed to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105. Byles Memorial Home, New London, is in charge of arrangements. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the guest book or share a memory with the family.
