Killingworth

Doreen Gammons, age 88, died at Middlesex Memorial Hospital surrounded by family on Aug. 9.

Born Nov. 14, 1929, in Poughkeepsie, New York, to Vera and William Clark, she attended Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and was a graduate of Wells College, Aurora, New York. She received a master’s degree from Syracuse University. On June 12, 1954, Doreen was given away by her beloved stepfather Arnold Hanchett and married the love of her life, James Gammons, in Syracuse, New York. They later traveled all over the world together.

Doreen taught elementary school for many years. She was an accomplished oil painter. She was active in local painting groups and taught decorative painting in her home studio for more than 35 years. She enjoyed her painting and students so much, many of her students became close friends whom she treasured. She loved hosting her annual holiday open house for friends and students. Doreen will be especially remembered for her kindness, patience, and sense of humor!

Survivors include her daughters Karen (Stuart) Thomas of Saratoga Springs, New York, and Connie (Ron) Harris of Killingworth; granddaughter Amanda Thomas of Saratoga Springs, New York; and stepbrother James C. Hanchett of New York City. Doreen was predeceased in 1992 by her husband James, and her stepsister Effie Hanchett.

Calling hours will be held Aug. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton. A mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 18 at St. Mary’s Church, 54 Grove St., Clinton. Following the mass, the burial will be at Beaver Brook Cemetery, Rte. 145, Clinton. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her and touched her life.
