East Haven

Daniel R. Bixby, 74, died at his home on June 2. He was born in New Haven on July 21, 1943, to the late Paul Daniel and Evelyn Quilliam Bixby.

Dan served his country in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed at Da Nang Air Base, Vietnam. He had previously been stationed at Chicksands Air Force Base, England. After returning from the war, he received his master of science degree in special education from Southern Connecticut State University. Dan taught school for more than 34 years, first in the Thomaston school system, then in the Colebrook consolidated school system until his retirement in 2005. He will always be remembered for his goofy persona and great sense of humor. Dan was an amazingly kind, loving, and gentle man, and was loved by everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his brother Paul H. Bixby and his wife Karen of Middletown and their son David W. Bixby; his sister Dorcas M. Bixby (Mickie) of Watertown; and his dear, lifelong friend, Sally Brown of Sydney, Maine. Dan is also survived by two uncles, Francis P. Quilliam of New Hampshire and Matthew Prang of Pennsylvania; as well as many cousins. Dan was predeceased by two aunts, Lynne VanVliet and Mary Prang; and two uncles, Russell Quilliam and Harold S. Bixby. He was also predeceased by his very dear friend of more than 45 years, Donald Ross.

A Memorial Service was held on June 23 at the East Haven Memorial Longobardi–Brennan Funeral Home, 425 Main St., East Haven, 203-467-1708.
