Old Saybrook

Marjorie Mary (Cushing) Crute, 72, of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully on July 26 surrounded by her loving family.

Born on Feb. 1, 1946, to the late John and Marion Cushing of West Haven, Marge grew up in the town of West Haven and would always share stories of the neighborhood kids and having fun at Savin Rock. After graduating from high school, Marge had careers at Armstrong Tire and the West Haven VA. After she married her first husband Walter Saczynski, Jr., (deceased), the couple moved to Guilford where they resided and raised their son for more than 20 years.

Marge had a special love for children that inspired her to open “Marge’s Daycare” in the 80’s, teaching and taking care of many children up until the late 90’s. She held a special bond with many of these children, and even after closing the business due to health reasons, she kept in touch with many of the families and was able to watch the children grow into successful adults.

In the late 90’s, Marge remarried and moved to Old Saybrook, where she and her husband George Crute (deceased), were frequent travelers, boaters, and spent their days enjoying life.

Known as “Crab Lady,” Marge could be found either crabbing at the docks or simply enjoying the water on any given day. If she wasn’t by the water, she was spending time in her garden, watching the birds who had taken up residence in one of her many birdhouses, or taking pleasure in the company of her Sheltie Misty. Among other things, she loved playing Bingo, watching the UConn girls’ basketball team, “tickling the ivories” on the family piano, crab rolls, and lobster dinners.

She is survived and will be deeply missed by her son Brian (Mary) Saczynski of Clinton; granddaughters Victoria Saczynski and Kailynne Crute; grandson Sean Beach; brother Jim (Cindy) Cushing of North Haven; brother John (Gail) Cushing of Branford; nieces Tricia Cushing, Debbie Gannon, and Susan Cushing; nephews Robert and Craig Cushing; as well as many beloved friends. She will also be greatly missed by George’s sons Barton and Jim Crute, along with Jim’s sons Bergren and Henry.

Her family wishes to thank all the doctors, specialists, the Visiting Nurses of Lower Valley, and Lower Valley Care Advocates for their kindness and compassion while taking care of Marge, which allowed her to live her life to the fullest.

Calling hours will be at Swan Funeral Home in Old Saybrook on Tuesday, Aug. 21 between 4 and 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Church in Old Saybrook on Wednesday, Aug. 22.
