Guilford

Josephine (Josie) Kurkulonis Sleivis, 100, entered into eternal rest on June 21. Josephine was born in Branford on Sept. 28, 1917, the daughter of the late George and Anna Kurkulonis. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Joseph Sleivis; her daughter Barbara; sisters Anna Kurkulonis, Eleanor Goclowski, and Mary Roettger; and brothers John Kurkulonis and George Kurk.

She is survived by her daughter Nancy and son-in-law Joe Petrowski of Guilford, and grandsons Joe Jr. of New York City and Nick of Guilford. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Josephine was previously employed by A.C. Gilbert and later as a home health aide with the Visiting Nurses of Branford. She enjoyed time with her friends and family, especially her grandsons. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, chocolate, trips to the casino, playing cards, and Connecticut scratch tickets.

She was known for her kind, caring demeanor and friendly sense of humor. Josephine’s favorite saying was “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”

Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church, 731 Main St., Branford, on Saturday, July 28 at 11 a.m. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guilford Food Bank, 310 State St., Unit 200, Guilford, CT 06437, or Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter, 749 E. Main St., Branford, CT 06405.
