Guilford

Mark Michael Barber, 58, a Guilford resident for the past 22 years, husband to Dawn (Chouinard) Barber and father to Nick, Emily, and Chris Barber, passed away on June 30 at Connecticut Hospice after a 13-month battle with brain cancer.

Mark was born on April 3, 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Dr. Henry Barber and Elizabeth (Scott) Barber of Mechanicville, New York.

Mark spent his early years in Claremont, California, where he discovered his love of swimming. When the family moved to Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Mark joined the Suburban Swim Club before moving to Mission Viejo, California, at age 15. It was in California with the Mission Viejo Natadores that he took swimming to the next level. His success earned him a swim scholarship to Pepperdine University in Malibu. His passion for swimming culminated in his qualifying for the 1980 Olympic trials.

Mark received his BS and MBA degrees from Pepperdine University and worked for a French company, SECME, as a general manager from 1987 to 1995. It was on his first trip to France that he met his wife, Dawn, whom he married in 1989. They resided in Laguna Nigel, California, before moving to Connecticut in 1995.

Mark went on to become the president and CEO of the US subsidiary of EAO Switch in Milford from 1996 to 2008. He enjoyed international business and continued his career with Baumer Electric in Southington from 2009 to 2015. Mark later became the president of SFC Koenig in North Haven in 2015, where he worked until becoming ill in 2017. He was respected by his colleagues and friends for his work ethic, approachable management style, and ever-present smile.

Mark will be most remembered for his sense of humor, positive outlook, and pride for his wife and children. He loved attending every school, sporting, or musical event they participated in.

We will have a celebration of Mark’s life on Aug. 4 at 11:00 a.m. at North Madison Congregational Church, 1271 Durham Rd., Madison.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405.
