John H. Crandall, Sr., 73, of Madison, beloved husband of Claudia Tomasitis Crandall, passed away on June 18 at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. Born in New Haven on Nov. 11, 1944, he was the son of the late Eugene and Dorothy Hawthorne Crandall.

John was a graduate of Milford High School, earned his associate’s degree from Stevens College in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and his bachelor’s degree from the Baltimore School of Commerce in Baltimore, Maryland. He was an accountant for several corporations, including Wire Works and Pelican Industries. He was a partner and CFO at New Line Communications and several other local companies.

Besides his wife and loving companion of 20 years, Claudia, he is survived by two children, Heather Crandall Rogers and her husband Peter of Deep River and John H. Crandall, Jr., also of Deep River; two stepchildren, Thomas Blanchette and his wife Amy of Bristol and Daniel T. Blanchette and his wife Rachel of Indianapolis, Indiana; and three granddaughters whom he absolutely adored, Kayla Rogers and Emily and Ava Blanchette. John is also survived by his sister Judith Landes of Independence, Missouri. He also leaves behind many other family and friends, in particular the “Over the Hill Gang” whom he loved and with whom he had a strong bond.

John was an antique car enthusiast and at one time owned a 1931 Model A Ford. He also loved the freedom and control of driving his Harley Davidson motorcycle back in the day. John was a great storyteller, recalling tales of his youth on his uncle’s farm in upstate New York. He loved Block Island; this was John and Claudia’s favorite place. John will be greatly missed.

Memorials may be made in John’s memory to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT 06405. The family wishes to thank Connecticut Hospice for their loving and compassionate treatment of not only John but his family during his stay.

The funeral service will be private and a celebration of John’s life will be held at the end of July.
