Old Saybrook

George Rowland Brown, Jr., 91, of Old Saybrook died May 31 at Apple Rehab in Mystic. He was born on Sept. 14, 1926, in New Haven, to Mary and George Brown.

He grew up in New York City, but moved back to Connecticut at 17 to work on submarines, and soon joined the U.S. Navy, where he served in WWII. After discharge he started college at Fort Trumbull and graduated from UConn in 1950. He also served in the Korean War aboard the USS Loesser.

He had a long career in various marketing firms, ending up in Connecticut as controller at CBT. In retirement he served eight years as an alumni trustee at UConn. He was also active in the establishment of the Shoreline Clinic, the UConn Health Center, and Gampel Basketball Arena. In 2001 he married Suzanne Taylor and returned to his Catholic heritage, becoming involved in St. Mark’s Parish Council in addition to serving as chair of Old Saybrook’s Ethics Committee.

He was predeceased by his oldest daughter Marjorie Szerlip and is survived by his son and daughter in addition to his sister Mary Lougee and brother Walter Brown, as well as grandsons Aaron and David Szerlip, their wives, and their children Aria and Jacob.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 30 at St. Mark’s Church in Westbrook, followed by a luncheon reception in the church hall.

George was a fourth degree Knight and a special color guard will be provided for his service.
