Killingworth

Thomas Frederick McCabe, 81, of Killingworth passed away on May 30 at home.

He was born on Oct. 14, 1936, in New Haven, the son of John Henry and Mae Emily (Jourdan) McCabe. Tom grew up in Branford, attending the high school there. He was a 4-H member in New Haven County, with projects that included horses, cattle, dogs, gardening, and canning. He was a member of the Stony Creek Fife and Drum Corps for a number of years, where he was an enthusiastic base drummer.

He was a veteran of the US Navy, where he served in the Korean conflict. He was active duty/reserves for six years. In 1964 he married and settled in Killingworth, where he resided until his death. Thomas was a conservation law enforcement officer with the State of Connecticut Marine Division, which went hand-in-hand with the fact he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and fly tying, and especially enjoyed fly fishing on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada. Tom was also a seasonal commercial lobsterman here in Connecticut, and he loved the Sound. Tom enjoyed his hunting dogs, pointers, and setters, and birds, having owned tumbler pigeons, chickens, parrots, and peafowl.

Thomas is survived by his wife Barbara Eckert McCabe; daughters Emily McCabe Alger and her husband H. Joseph Alger, Jr., of East Haddam, and Elizabeth McCabe of Moodus; daughter-in-law Heather Birdsey; and grandchildren Nicole and Carlie Chapman, Mikayla Alger, and Broden Wells. He was predeceased by his son John William McCabe.

Calling hours were held on June 5 at Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main St., Clinton. A memorial service was held on June 6 at the funeral home. Burial with military honors followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Killingworth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Middlesex and New Haven County 4-H Fair Association, 1066 Saybrook Rd., Haddam, CT 06438, or to A Place Called Hope (a local Birds of Prey rehab and educational center), 154 Pond Meadow Rd., Killingworth, CT 06419, or to Tsunami FHC (field hockey scholarship account), 59 Wickham Rd., East Haddam, CT 06423.
