Westbrook

John Patrick MacSweeney, age 85 of Westbrook, formerly of Watertown, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 10 at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of Cecilia (Mueller) MacSweeney.

Mr. MacSweeney was born on March 17, 1933, in Oakville, son of the late Timothy E. and Rose (Rinaldi) MacSweeney. He attended Crosby High School and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was, with his wife, the owner and operator of the Watertown Rest Home for more than 40 years. He also worked for the State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles as an inspector for more than 25 years.

John was a model railroad enthusiast as well as an avid restorer of vintage automobiles. He was an active member of the Connecticut Historical Automobile Society and the Crankin’ Yanks Model T Club. He and his wife were longtime residents of Watertown, where they were members of St. Mary Magdalen Church, and then relocated to Westbrook, where they were members of St. Mark Parish. John was well known for his fine Irish wit and humor, but what mattered most to him was his family. He will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know and love him.

Besides his devoted wife, the light of his life for 64 wonderful years, John leaves his eight children, Tim E. and his wife Roberta of Woodbury; John of Litchfield; Steven and his wife Marcia of Watertown; Thomas and his wife Gretchen of Grandview, Missouri; Nancy Calo and her husband Joseph of Bethlehem; Margaret LaPointe of Oakville; Laura MacSweeney of Watertown; and Joan MacSweeney of Litchfield. He also leaves a brother, Robert G. MacSweeney and his wife Diane of Winter Park, Florida, as well as 18 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his sisters Rosemary and Kathleen and his grandson James LaPointe.

Funeral services for Mr. MacSweeney were held on May 16, when a Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Mary Magdalen Church on Buckingham Street, Oakville. Burial with full Military Honors followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Watertown. Relatives and friends visited with John’s family on May 15 at the O’Neill Funeral Home, 742 Main St., Oakville, CT.
