Barbara Rankin, the family matriarch, left this earth on April 24, after a fulfilled and meaningful life. She was the daughter of Clarence and Bernadine (McAvoy) Hills, spending her early years in East Hartford with her siblings Harold, Art, and Ruthie.

Years later she met Robert at a softball game in April. Six months later they were married. Although their courtship was brief, their marriage lasted through the test of time, over six decades. As a loving wife, life partner, and helpmate she shared common interests with her husband. Together they furthered their education (graduating with honors from Middlesex Community College and being nominated to Who’s Who Among College Students). They raised and trained Labrador retrievers, shot skeet, and were members of Toastmasters International. In addition, she was a successful career woman at Aetna Life and Casualty, where some of her more notable jobs were team member of the target risk department, and tour guide and head of special projects.

She was the nurturing, supportive, loving mom to cherished daughter Bonnie. Together they were more than mother and daughter, they were best friends and buddies. Their special bond will continue through loving thoughts and memories.

Her world changed substantially when the light of her life, grandsons Jesse and Kyle were born. She was a key contributor to their lives and was always available to offer her special love, support, guidance, and kindness. She opened her heart to daughter-in-law Maura and Kyle’s partner Brittany, aka Ladybug. She stepped into her final role as great-grandmother with abundant love and joy when Cavan, Jesse and Maura’s son was born. Her smile lit up the room when she got to spend time with her loved ones.

A celebration of her life will be held at the convenience of the family. Until that time please remember Barbara when you see beautiful flowers in bloom, watch birds on a feeder, or feel a soft breeze.
