Guilford

Mary Alice “Pepper” Brogden, 92, passed away peacefully on April 14, surrounded by family.

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, Pepper graduated from Saint Ursula Academy and Bowling Green State University, where she also enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. Later, Pepper earned her master of social work at Saint Louis University. Social work took her to Galveston, Texas, and, eventually, Yale-New Haven Hospital, where she met her future husband, Dr. John “Jack” Brogden.

Pepper and Jack settled in Guilford, where Pepper continued her social work practice first with Connecticut Hospice in Branford and later in the Madison schools. For many years she was active with the Guilford Community Fund. While she was an avid reader, some of her happiest times were spent gardening, or honing recipes in her kitchen. Pepper loved to take the train into the city to see a favorite opera. Until recently, she was still able to indulge her lifelong love of walking.

Pepper was predeceased by her husband Jack, and sisters Vivian Beeler and Anne Flury. She is survived by her daughters Sally (Todd Johnson) Brogden of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Anne (Rob) Edwards of Woodbridge; son John Brogden of Manchester; 3 grandchildren; and brother Roland L. Beeler, Jr., (Joyce) of Sylvania, Ohio.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Monday, April 30 at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Church, Guilford. Arrangements in the care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St., Guilford. To share a memory or leave condolences, visit www.guilfordfuneralhome.com.
