North Branford

Hans Tjardes of North Branford died peacefully on April 7 surrounded by his family in Branford. Hans was born in Jever, Germany, Nov. 29, 1938, son of the late Hans and Grete Tjardes (Schonbohm).

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maria Tjardes (Ciarlo) and three children, Anne Johnson (husband Mark) and children Marzia and Caroline of Branford; Marta Elmasry and children Lauren and Katherine of Branford; and Albert Tjardes (wife Jessica) and daughter Erin of East Lyme. He is also survived by his sisters Marta Frerichs and Irmgard Oltmanns (both of Jever, Germany).

Hans arrived in the United States on a one-way ticket with $40 and the American dream. He met his future wife while they were learning English together. He enjoyed spending time with his family at Linsley Lake, and playing bocce at Branford Point. He touched so many lives with his smile, laughter, and kind nature. He always had an appreciation of all people and cultures. With his wife and family he loved to travel the world. Hans was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church and was employed by Stop & Shop for more than four decades.

Funeral services were held April 10 at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford. Burial was private. Friends called prior to the service.
