Norbert William Church

Norbert William Church of Branford passed away peacefully at his home on April 8. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Margaret (Peggy) Byrne Church. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, Jan. 22, 1922, son of the late Norbert Marion and Pauline Fernandez Church.

Norbert was a graduate of Queens College. He received an MBA from the University Of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, after which, he had a long career as an investment broker.

A member of the Pine Orchard Yacht and Country Club for 56 years, he served on the Board of Governors and was a past commodore. He was a past member of the Quinnipiac Club in New Haven and the Branford Exchange Club.

He is also survived by his children Norbert W. Church, Jr., of Branford; Andrea Fraser (Don) of Mooresville, North Carolina; Mary Ellen Swan of Branford; Cynthia Derdeyn (Leslie) of Ft. Worth, Texas; Jeanne Hughes (Rich) of Branford; Margie Murray (Bill) of Stony Creek; and Martha Lombardi (Al) of Branford. He also leaves his son-in-law Richard Swan of Branford; daughter-in-law Margaret K. Church of Branford; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; beloved niece BettyAnn Catalino; and many other nieces and nephews and extended family.

One of the greatest, from the “greatest generation,” Norbert was a gentleman always, and had a great sense of integrity. A humble man, he would probably be embarrassed by these words, as he never looked for accolades. His keen sense of humor was legendary. Once, many years back, with seven little children around the dinner table, a whole gallon of milk spilled on him. Being a lifelong, avid sailor, the next night, he appeared at the table in full foul weather gear. From before their marriage, to just a few years ago, he and Peg had many “adventures” and happy times sailing with family and friends. He also had a lifelong love of tennis, encouraging many a friend or child to pick up this “neat” game.

A great joy to Norb was swimming in his pond during the summer, which he often did, even before going to the office in the morning. His greatest joys though, were his wife Peggy, family, and friends. His warmth and kindness to all, and the twinkle in his eyes will be sorely missed.

The family would like to offer special thanks to Antoinette and Sonia for their love and support.

A private memorial service may be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Brian’s Hope brianshope.org, or savethesound.org.
