Branford

Anna Marie Carelli Sullo, 93, of Branford, beloved wife of the late John F. Sullo, Sr., passed away on April 4 in Yale-New Haven Hospital. Anna was born in New Haven on Dec. 11, 1924, daughter of the late Dominic and Mary Civitello Carelli.

She was the loving mother of Linda (John) Savarese, Sr., and John F. (Christine) Sullo, Jr., all of Branford; Angela Sullo of Guilford; and the late Mary Ann Rizzuto. She was the grandmother of Peter (Michelle) Rizzuto, John Savarese, Jr., John F. (Jennifer) Sullo III, Laura Criscuolo, Paula (Jonathan) Minichino, Lisa (Adam) Burkitt, and Michelle (Bill) Gilson. She was the great-grandmother of Amelia Minichino, Peter J. Rizzuto, Gabriella Burkitt, and Pia Rizzuto. She was the sister of the late Angelina Izzo, Demetria Wielgarecki, and John Carelli.

She graduated from Commercial High School in New Haven. Anna was married to the late John F. Sullo, Sr., on April 24, 1942; they were married for 63 years. Anna was a homemaker and played an active part in raising all of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her kitchen was the meeting place for her family and friends, and her door was always open. She loved to cook, especially on holidays. She also enjoyed casinos and playing the numbers, which she always seemed to win. She loved Yankees baseball and especially enjoyed old timer’s day. It was amusing hearing her talk about DiMaggio or Berra getting old, even though she was older than they were. She liked shopping for a bargain like it was a game, and she enjoyed saying she paid less than you! Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Later in life being able to spend time with her great-grandchildren was a beautiful gift the entire family benefited from.

The family wishes you to join in the celebration of her life.

Her funeral procession left the Porto Funeral Home, 234 Foxon Rd. (Rte. 80), East Haven, April 9. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Mary’s Church, Branford. Interment followed in St. Agnes Cemetery. Friends may called April 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
