Essex

Jeannette Jones Pollard, beloved wife of William Appleby Pollard, died on Feb. 8 at home in Essex, surrounded by her family. Born in 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jeannette was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wandesford Jones.

She graduated from Pembroke College and Brown University in 1948 and worked briefly in publishing. In 1986, Jeannette and Bill moved to Essex, where she enjoyed gardening, golf, and tennis and was captivated by the birds and magnificence of Middle Cove. In 2007 they retired at Essex Meadows. Jeannette was a former Trustee at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts; was active with the Essex Historical Society, Essex Art Association, and Essex Garden Club; was Pembroke College ‘48 class secretary; and was a former member of Old Lyme Country Club, Black Hall Club, Old Lyme Beach Club, Essex Yacht Club, and Essex Corinthian Yacht Club.

Prior to moving to Essex, Jeannette and Bill settled in Devon, Pennsylvania, where they raised their four girls. While living in Pennsylvania for nearly three decades, she tirelessly volunteered for many organizations, including serving on the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Philadelphia Society for the Preservation of Landmarks. Jeannette was a loyal supporter of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and a former member of the Cosmopolitan Club of Philadelphia, Waynesborough Country Club, and Annapolis Yacht Club. Family, the arts, historic preservation, and nature were the center of her life. Known as a remarkable sport, Jeannette was game for most anything along with her boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Many of her summers were spent cruising on the Chesapeake and winters skiing in Vail, Colorado. Bill’s quest for travel and Jeannette’s adventurous spirit took them to the far reaches of the world, circumnavigating the world fourteen times. Most of all, Jeannette was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and will be remembered for her kind heart and sparkling spirit.

She is survived by Bill, her husband of 68 years; daughters Jennie Kurtz of Denver, Colorado, Judith Danforth of Providence, Rhode Island, Wendy Pollard of Essex, and Edith Tower of Newton, Massachusetts; and their husbands, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Bill and his family would like to thank the caring staff of Essex Meadows for their kindness and dedication.

The family service will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jeannette Pollard may be made to the Essex Meadows Scholarship Foundation, 30 Bokum Rd., Essex, CT 06426, or Essex Land Trust, PO Box 373, Essex, CT 06426.
