North Branford

Eunice Colter Haggarty was born in North Branford, the daughter of Burton and Alice Colter. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 68 years, John M. Haggarty; all three of her children, Deborah, John, and Dawn Haggarty; her brothers Burton and Tom Colter; and her sister Alice Brindley. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Judy Haggarty of Guilford; her grandchildren Matthew Haggarty of New Hampshire and Mary (Kurtison) MacWilliams of Massachusetts; her brand new great-grandson Elias John MacWilliams; her nieces Vicky Brindley Harrison (Dudley) of North Branford, and Leslie Brindley Potter (Ted) of Guilford; and many nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.

Eunice attended Jerome Harrison School in North Branford and graduated from Hillhouse in New Haven. She had planned to train as a nurse, but went straight to work at A.C. Gilbert so that she could marry her John. They lived together on Long Hill Road in Guilford for almost 70 years; she recently moved to the Hearth in Madison.

Eunice loved life, having fun, hugs, children, playing bridge and all games (especially when she was winning), making delicious sensible meals, following the UConn women’s basketball team, eating at Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale, being a Girl Scout leader, teaching Sunday School, and above all her Lord. She worked as a waitress in several local restaurants; many remember her from her years as the hostess at Bernice’s. She also looked after children at a SARAH day care and in her home. She was a member of the North Guilford Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, Homemakers, Melissa Jones PTA, King’s Daughters, and North Guilford Congregational Church.
