North Haven

Mary Ann K. Wozniak Mitchell, 83, of North Haven, passed away peacefully on Dec. 29 at Yale-New Haven Hospital/St. Raphael campus with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Donald G. Mitchell. Mary Ann was born in New Haven on May 26, 1934, an only child of Frances (Ferenc) and James Wozniak.

She grew up in Fair Haven and attended St. Francis Grammar School and St. Mary’s High School in New Haven. She received her bachelor’s degree from New Haven State Teacher’s College (now Southern Connecticut State University) in 1956 and her master’s degree in 1962. She taught at Ridge Road School in North Haven before starting her family. Mary Ann and her husband celebrated 63 years of marriage.

She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and faithfully watched the UConn girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. She was a member of the High Lane Club, where she served on the Board of Governors. She also belonged to the North Haven Senior Center where she made many wonderful, lasting friends playing cards.

Mary Ann also belonged to the St. Mary’s lunch group, which met every month for lunch and fun times with school classmates. She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the world and wintered in Barbados in the Caribbean. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Hamden, where she helped parishioners plan funerals for their loved ones through the Funeral Ministry program.

She was the loving mother of Tracy Mitchell of Madison, Gregg A. Mitchell (Steven Kirkby) of Sudbury, Massachusetts; and four loving grandchildren who brought her much pleasure, Tessa and Christian Amato of Madison, and twins Joshua and Caleb Mitchell of Sudbury, Massachusetts.

Her funeral procession left the North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Ave., Jan. 3. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Hamden. Interment followed in All Saints Cemetery. The visiting hours were Jan. 2 from 3 to 6 p.m. It was her wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be donated to the Mary Ann K. Mitchell and Donald G. Mitchell Scholarship Fund at Southern Connecticut State University, 501 Crescent St., New Haven, CT 06515. For an online obituary, visit www.northhavenfuneral.com.
